Setup Guide

Get RideTracka running on your Garmin Edge and phone in 5 minutes.

1

Install the Garmin Data Field

This gives you a live heads-up display on your Garmin showing gap times and distances to every rider in your group. Without it, you'd have no way to know how far ahead or behind your mates are — it turns your Edge into a real-time group radar.

  1. Go to the Garmin Connect IQ Store on your phone or computer.
  2. Search for 'RideTracka' and install it on your Edge device.
  3. On your Garmin, add the RideTracka data field to an activity profile (e.g. Road Cycling). It appears alongside your other data fields like speed and heart rate.
Get it on Connect IQ

Compatible with Edge 840, 1040, 540, 530, 830, 1030 Plus, 520 Plus, and more.

2

Download the Phone App

The app is where you create and schedule rides, invite others, and manage your group. It also tracks your gear and service intervals. Think of the Garmin as the on-bike display and the app as the control centre — you need both to get the full experience.

  1. Download RideTracka on your iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Open the app and set your rider name — this is how you'll appear to others on their Garmin screens and in the app.

Pair Your Garmin

Pairing links your Garmin to the app so they work as one system. Without pairing, the Garmin doesn't know which ride to join and the app can't display your sensor data. Once paired, your Garmin automatically joins whatever ride you've set up in the app — no manual room codes on the bike.

  1. Open the RideTracka app on your phone.
  2. Tap the settings icon (top right) and select 'Pair Garmin Device'.
  3. On your Garmin, start an activity with the RideTracka data field. It will display a 4-character pairing code.
  4. Enter the code in the app.
  5. You'll see a 'Paired' confirmation on both devices.

Create or Join a Ride

A ride is a shared live session — it's what connects everyone together. Creating a ride generates a unique code that acts as your group's private channel. Once your group joins the same ride, all GPS positions and gap times flow between everyone's devices in real time.

Creating a Ride

Tap My Rides on the home screen, then 'Schedule a Ride'. Set a title, date, and location. Choose Private (invite only) or Public (discoverable by nearby riders). Share the 8-digit ride code with your group via text, WhatsApp, or any messaging app.

Joining a Ride

Tap My Rides, then 'Join by Code'. Enter the 8-digit code shared by the ride creator. Or tap a share link — it opens the ride directly in the app. Your paired Garmin picks up the ride automatically, so you only need to join once from your phone.

Start Riding

This is where it all comes together. Once your Garmin starts, your position streams to the group automatically. You'll see live gap times and distances to every rider — updated continuously on both your Garmin and phone.

  • Press Start on your Garmin as you normally would — no extra steps.
  • The app detects your Garmin and syncs automatically — timer, GPS, and sensor data all flow through.
  • Your group appears on the RideTracka data field with live gap times and distances.
  • The phone app mirrors your ride — elapsed time, distance, and the status of every rider.
  • Tap the pin icon next to a rider to prioritise them — pinned riders stay at the top of your Garmin, and you can flip to Pinned Only to hide the rest in bigger groups.

Tip

The phone stops sending GPS when your Garmin is active, to save battery.

Troubleshooting

Garmin shows a pairing code

Your Garmin isn't paired yet. Enter the code shown on your Garmin into the app under Settings > Pair Garmin Device.

Garmin shows "Waiting for room"

Your Garmin is paired but the app hasn't joined a room yet. Create or join a ride in the app first.

Gap times show --:--

Gaps need at least 2 riders with GPS locked. Ride for a minute to let breadcrumbs accumulate.

Battery not updating on app

Make sure the RideTracka data field is added to your activity profile on your Garmin (not just installed). Battery updates every 5 seconds during a ride.
